Shown here after receiving his sight — following Jesus on the way (Mark 10:52).
Bartimaeus
The Blind Beggar of Jericho
In Mark’s Gospel
Hearing it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out: "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" (Mark 10:47) — calling him the Messiah's title
Many rebuked him, telling him to be silent — "but he cried out all the more, 'Son of David, have mercy on me!'"
Mark 10:48
Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." They told him, "Take heart. Get up; he is calling you"
Mark 10:49
Throwing off his cloak — his only possession, his beggar's license — he sprang up and came to Jesus
Mark 10:50
Who they were
- Persistent — would not be silenced, cried out "all the more" (Mark 10:48)
- Theologically bold — a blind beggar confessing Jesus as "Son of David" while the crowds just said "Jesus of Nazareth" (Mark 10:47)
- Decisive — threw off his cloak before he was healed, staking everything on Jesus (Mark 10:50)
