Herod Antipas
Tetrarch of Galilee · The Divided King
In Mark’s Gospel
Heard about Jesus and feared he was John the Baptist raised from the dead — "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised" (Mark 6:14-16). His guilty conscience spoke.
Others said Jesus was Elijah or a prophet like the prophets of old; Herod insisted: "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised"
Mark 6:15-16
Imprisoned John for saying, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife"
Mark 6:17-18
"Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly" (Mark 6:20) — a divided man, drawn to the truth yet unwilling to obey it
Who they were
- Conscience-stricken but weak — he knew John was righteous, heard him gladly, yet caved to pressure (Mark 6:20, 26)
- Proud — would not break a rash oath before his guests, even to commit murder (Mark 6:26)
- Superstitious — haunted by the thought that John had risen (Mark 6:16)
