Jairus
Synagogue Leader · A Father's Plea
In Mark’s Gospel
Seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet and implored him earnestly: "My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live" (Mark 5:22-23) — a synagogue ruler humbling himself publicly
On the way, messengers came: "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?"
Mark 5:35
Jesus answered: "Do not fear, only believe"
Mark 5:36
Jesus took only Peter, James, and John — and the child's parents — into the house
Mark 5:37, 40
Who they were
- Humble — a man of status who fell at Jesus's feet in front of a crowd (Mark 5:22)
- Persistent in faith — kept believing after the worst news a father can hear (Mark 5:35-36)
- Obedient — did exactly as Jesus directed, bringing only whom Jesus chose (Mark 5:37-40)
