The Rich Young Ruler
The One Who Walked Away
Scripture gives no name
In Mark’s Gospel
Ran up and knelt before Jesus: "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" (Mark 10:17) — earnest, humble, urgent
Jesus answered: "Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone" (Mark 10:18) — pointing him to who Jesus is
He listed the commandments; the man said, "Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth"
Mark 10:19-20
"And Jesus, looking at him, loved him" — the only person in the Gospels of whom this is said
Mark 10:21
Who they were
- Earnest — ran, knelt, asked the most important question (Mark 10:17)
- Sincere — Jesus did not dispute his claim to have kept the commandments (Mark 10:20-21)
- Loved by Jesus — looked at with love even in the moment of refusal (Mark 10:21)
