Scripture never names her — she is only "the daughter of Herodias" (Mark 6:22). The historian Josephus calls her Salome.
Daughter of Herodias
Unnamed in Scripture
Scripture gives no name
In Mark’s Gospel
At Herod's birthday banquet, she came in and danced, and she pleased Herod and his guests
Mark 6:22
Herod swore to her: "Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom"
Mark 6:23
She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask?" — Herodias answered, "The head of John the Baptist"
Mark 6:24
She came in immediately with haste and said, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter"
Mark 6:25
Who they were
- Young — a girl dancing at a banquet, asking her mother what to wish for (Mark 6:22, 24)
- Used — her mother turned a dance into a murder (Mark 6:24-25)
- A tragedy, not a villainess — Scripture shows a young woman caught in her mother's scheme, not its author
